Tossing Photos

3 Jul

Some of you may be too young to remember this, but it wasn’t that long ago that we generally purchased prints of every photo on a roll of film, and put every single one into a photo album. We did it because that’s just what everyone did; photos were a huge investment! Then scrapbooking came along, and we were taught that we could throw the bad ones away. (That was really hard at first, by the way.)

Now we have digital photography, and after you’ve purchased the camera, it costs virtually nothing to snap all the photos you want to. We end up with hundreds more photos taken, though we delete the bad photos immediately. But how should you decide which to print and include in an album and which aren’t necessary to keep?

This is a personal decision, but there are two questions I ask myself when it comes to tossing photos:

  1. Do I want to share it with others now or in the future?
  2. Do I want to remember it always?

If it’s an absolute no to both, the photo gets deleted. If either one is yes, I will print it for a traditional album or include it in a digital one. And just to be clear: by a digital album, I mean an actual printed photo book, not a virtual one shared in cyberspace (although I do that, too, sometimes). Print is positively the best, longest-lasting end product for your photos and the stories that go with them. Digital sources like files on CDs and hard drives just aren’t as reliable. I’ll save the reasons why for a future article.

    Hi Carolyn,
This blog is a great idea! Thanks for the advice about tossing photos. We keep waaaay too many on our computer. We’ve actually printed very few (except for 100’s of the same one for Christmas cards).
